The Quest for Identity

When I was in my early 20s, I discovered a pivotal truth in how I viewed myself, and how I viewed God. Years prior, I received the impression that even after getting saved, that we were still in a constant battle with sin. A Christian seemed to be someone who was just a sinner saved from grace. Someone who needed to constantly repent, and encourage others to do the same. I understood the verses giving instruction on making the right lifestyle choices, but we seemed to fail as often as if weren’t saved. So what’s the difference? The one truth that changed my entire outlook was learning that we are sons and daughters of God.

Galatians 3:26 says, “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ, have clothed yourselves with Christ.”

Being God’s child, adopted into his family, gives us complete access to Him. If we still think of ourselves as being sinners after being saved, we would continually be reminded of our failures, and be hesitant to approach God, wondering if he is mad at us. But we have instruction from the book of Hebrews.

Hebrews 4:16- “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

God Loves You

We can come to God anytime we want to. We are His children, and he is our Father. This relationship is the defining characteristic of being a Christian. If you had to remember one thing today, is that you are a beloved child of God. In our own families, when we see the parent/child relationship, it directly mirrors the Father/Son, Father/Daughter relationship that we have in God.

Romans 8:17- “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

As children of God, we inherit everything: Heaven itself is ours. Earth is ours. At the end of the age, in the book of Revelation, Heaven will come down to Earth. God’s dwelling will be among his people. Everything on Heaven and Earth, is part of our inheritance.

Father God

It’s a perspective flip, when we realize how much we inherit through Christ. In the previous verse, the Bible even calls us co-heirs with Christ. We inherit everything that Jesus won for us. Victory, an abundant life, even an eternal life in Heaven with God. It’s so much more than we realize. I would say that when I was younger, I saw God through the lens of servant-hood rather than as a loving Father. Someone that I needed to obey, because I was supposed to. I know God loved me, but that I needed to watch my behavior. It wasn’t until I learned that he viewed us as His very own children, that changed everything in how I related to Him. He didn’t want to punish me, or scold me for my sin. Jesus already took the punishment on the cross. Instead, when we mess up, we humble ourselves before Him, and He listens. He will teach us discipline and good habits. He will comfort, console us, and deliver us. He’s a loving Father, and he is not afraid of our failures.

Son of God

In Christ Jesus, you are forgiven, set free, blameless and pure. You are the righteousness of God, in Christ Jesus. You are no longer a sinner, but a saint. Your sins, past and future, have been erased. That’s what it means to be a son or daughter, and that’s the freedom that you have in Christ. It’s one of the most empowering truths, that you may know your identity in Christ, and believe in Him. You are worthy, and He would have still gone to the cross, if you were the only who needed to be saved.

Pray With Me

You can become a child of God today. Say this prayer with me:

Heavenly Father, I repent of my sins, and I turn away from them. I believe in my heart, that Jesus went to the cross for me, died in my place, for my sins, and rose again on the third day. From this day forward, you are my Lord and Savior.

If you prayed that today, you are now a child of God! Welcome to the family!!!
